My favorite part of any meal when going out for dinner is the bread basket.  I love starting off a good dinner with a fresh, hot roll or slice of bread. Even though I am trying to steer clear of carbs while I’m getting my summer body in check, I wanted to try to recreate one of my favorite breads from Outback Steakhouse, the Honey Wheat bread.  It’s one of my favorite breads, especially when it comes hot from the oven. Spread some butter on top and let it melt in your mouth. So delicious every time! Today, I am sharing with you my recreation of this recipe, I thoroughly enjoyed it and I hope you do too!

INGREDIENTS 2 ½ cups warm water ¼ cup vegetable oil 2 tablespoons caramel color ½ cup honey 3 ½ cups whole wheat flour 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder 2 tablespoons active dry yeast 1 tablespoon salt 2-3 cups bread flour Rolled oats for a light dusting on top

Serving Size: 2 Loaves, 24 slices.

Step One: In a bowl of a stand mixer, fitted with a dough hook, add water, oil, caramel color and honey and mix very well together.  If you do not have a mixer, beat together with a whisk.

Step Two:  Next, add wheat flour to the water mixture you’ve just created.Stir.

Step Three: Add cocoa, yeast and salt to the mixture and stir until fully blended.

Step Four: Set this mixture aside for 10 minutes and let sit.

Step Five: Stir in bread flour, but do this one cup at a time until the dough begins to cling to the hook and almost clears the sides of the mixer.  This should take 3-4 minutes. Again, if you do not have a mixer, this will take longer.

Step Six: Cover your bowl with a greased plastic wrap.

Step Seven: Let dough rise in the bowl until it doubles in size.  Typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes. So be patient!

Step Eight: Divide into 2 pieces and cover each piece with greased plastic wrap.  Let the dough rest for about 5 minutes.

Step Nine: Shape the dough pieces into loaves and sparingly, sprinkle the oats on top.

Step Ten: Place the newly formed loaves into a greased 9×5” loaf pan and let dough rise until it’s doubled. Takes another 30-60 minutes.

Step Eleven: Toward the end of the rising time, about 30 minutes into it, preheat the oven to 350 F and bake the loaves for 30-40 minutes.
