Helsinki, Finland was the next stop on Royal Caribbean’s Serenade of The Sea’s! The southern capital offers plenty of things to do and experience for people of all ages. There are beautiful structures and churches, museums that will amaze you, and scenery that will take your breath away. I was lucky enough to travel here during the time of their Midsummer festivities. Every year at the end of June, Finland has its annual Midsummer Festival. In other words, people pack up and head to party the night away in the never ending day. What I mean by that is it doesn’t get dark for a day. The midnight sun and white night is what it’s famous for. It marks the end of spring and beginning of summer for Finland. This national holiday is considered to have magical qualities.

While I wasn’t lucky enough to party with the natives, I still experienced a once in a lifetime phenomenon. I also was able to experience Winter World which is the polar opposite of Midsummer. Instead of honoring the warm weather beginning, you’re engorged in a world full of ice and 25 degree weather. Winter World is what they like to call bringing Lapland to Helsinki. Lapland is an area above the Arctic Circle combining parts of Finland, Russia, Norway and Sweden. It is said that you “need” to travel and visit Lapland, but most people don’t, therefore they bring Lapland to Helsinki at Winter World. This place was something I had been looking forward too. Not only do they have bars that are entirely made of ice, but they offer dog sledding as one of the activities. I had been dog sledding once before in Vermont and it was incredible so to be able to do it again in another country was even more amazing. Winter World also offers plenty of other activities for people of all ages. Some of these include sledding down hills, trying your luck on the tandem skis, pushing your friend on a kick sledge and even peeking inside of some igloos.

Doing such drastically different activities called for different outfits. I started off the day in shorts. I was in my summer vibe still. Pairing it with an off the shoulder sweater to remind me that later on I’d be in the frigid cold. If you couldn’t tell I’m a very huge fan of Henri Bendel. I try to match one of his bags with almost every outfit I wear. This was the perfect time to break out my new one that’s a little on the bigger side that could hold my change of clothes. I was only in Finland for a short period of time but it’s a place I would return too so I can see everything else.
